Revive Your Siding for the Upcoming Season

August 31, 2023 by Angela Black

As the warmth of summer gradually gives way to the crisp embrace of fall, it’s time to shift our focus to ensuring our homes remain in top-notch condition for the changing seasons. This month, we’re diving into a crucial aspect of home maintenance: cleaning and repairing your siding. After months of battling the elements, your siding might be showing signs of wear, from dirt accumulation to potential mildew growth. But fear not! With a little attention and effort, your siding can regain its luster and be ready to face the months ahead.

Step 1: The Deep Clean

As we bid farewell to summer, your siding might be donning a layer of dirt and perhaps even some unsightly mildew spots. Early fall is the ideal time to roll up your sleeves and give your siding a thorough cleaning. Start by preparing a solution of soapy water—this gentle yet effective concoction will help remove grime and built-up residue without causing any harm to your siding’s surface.

Using a soft-bristle brush or a cloth, gently scrub the siding, paying extra attention to areas that seem particularly stained or affected by mildew. Take your time and enjoy the process of revealing the fresh, vibrant surface that’s been hidden beneath the grime. Once you’ve covered all the siding, give it a good rinse with clean water to remove the soapy residue.

Step 2: Fill in the Gaps

With the cleaning done, it’s time to examine your siding for any signs of wear and tear. In areas where two pieces of siding meet, gaps might have developed over time. These gaps not only compromise the aesthetics of your home but can also lead to issues like water infiltration and decreased insulation efficiency.

To address these gaps, reach for a reliable caulking product. Carefully apply the caulking material to the areas where siding pieces meet, filling in the gaps completely. Use your finger to smooth out the caulking and ensure a seamless appearance. Once you’ve applied the caulking, take a damp sponge and wipe away any excess to create a neat finish.

Important Note: Handle with Care

While it’s essential to fill in gaps to maintain your siding’s integrity, exercise caution when applying caulking. Avoid caulking the underside of your siding. This space needs to remain open to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of your siding during temperature fluctuations.

Step 3: A Final Touch

After allowing the caulking to set for a few days, it’s time to put the finishing touches on your siding revival. Equip yourself with a pressure washer and give the entire area a comprehensive clean. The pressure washer will help remove any remaining dirt, grime, or residue, leaving your siding looking refreshed and vibrant.

Bonus Tip: Taking Charge of the Process

If you’re keen to save on professional costs, consider taking a proactive approach to siding maintenance. Employ a good-quality camera or even a drone to zoom in on your siding and identify problem areas before they worsen. Additionally, investing in a pressure washer could be a smart move in the long run. Rentals typically cost around $35, while purchasing a machine ranges between $100-$200. Having your pressure washer on hand will prove valuable for future maintenance tasks.

Embrace the changing of seasons with a revitalized home exterior. By following these simple steps, you’ll not only enhance your home’s curb appeal but also ensure its protection from the elements. Get ready to bask in the satisfaction of a job well done, knowing that your siding is prepared to face whatever the upcoming months bring.
